On the Willmore energy of curves under second order infinitesimal bending

The change of the Willmore energy, as a special case of so-called Hel-
frich energy, under second order infi nitesimal bending of curves in a three-
dimensional Euclidean space is studied. The fi rst and the second variation
of the Willmore energy are obtained.
